| What is Public Liability insurance?
If your work means you come into contact with members of the public and their property – and that includes customers – then you really should have Public Liability insurance. Without it, you could face losing your livelihood.
Paying for damage to people or property
Public Liability insurance covers you if you’re unlucky enough to injure someone or damage their property, and they sue you for compensation. As well as the amount of compensation involved, you’d probably be liable for their legal costs too; all in all it could be a significant amount, which you might only raise by selling your business – unless you have Public Liability insurance.
How much do you need?
Claims on Public Liability policies tend to be quite high, so policies usually have a minimum of £1million cover, and may go up to £5million. You should check your customer contracts, to see if they specify a minimum amount for your Public Liability insurance. Local authorities, for example, usually insist their sub-contractors have at least £5million cover.
What work do you do?
When you get a Public Liability quote, give the insurer as much information as you can about the type of work you do. Different trades will have different conditions, so if your work covers more than one trade, make sure you tell your insurer, or your insurance might not be valid. You’ll probably find the exclusions and endorsements on a Liability policy are a lot more detailed than on your Van Insurance. Our advice is, if it’s not clear, just ask.
