It's now much more common for people to drive their vans over to mainland Europe, for business or pleasure. If you go, remember your van must be legally insured for every country you intend to visit. The penalties for driving without insurance can be severe.
Take proof of your Van Insurance with you
To prove your van insurers are covering you for the countries you’re visiting, you need a Green Card. These days, many van insurers will supply a European certificate as part of your policy, which takes the place of the Green Card in all EU member states, plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Liechtenstein.
If you're driving to other countries, check your insurer will cover you and provide a Green Card – so leave time to organise this before you go.
Possible restrictions to your Van Insurance policy
Some van insurers will only issue Green Card cover or a European certificate if you contact them before travelling. You may have to pay an extra premium and you might find there’s a limit to the number of days per year you can drive overseas.
