Drivers without car and van insurance could find their vehicles crushed or clamped as the Government bring in tough penalties. If vehicles are not declared off road with the DVLA and SORN they must be insured. The new Continuous Insurance Enforcement law makes it an offence to be a keeper of an uninsured vehicle rather than just driving whilst uninsured.
Registered owners and drivers who are caught without insurance will be sent a warning letter followed by a fine of £100. If the vehicle remains uninsured then it may be clamped, seized or destroyed. The Department for Transport says 23,000 people are injured and 160 killed each year by incidents involving uninsured drivers.
According to the Department for Transport uninsured drivers are more likely to cause an accident as well as push up the cost of insurance for everyone else.
The initiative has come after revelations of some 1.4 million uninsured vehicles taking to Britain’s motorways.
