Included on the policy of many private car owners is the extension to drive other cars on a Third Party Only basis. This means that in an emergency, they would be able to drive a vehicle owned by, and insured by someone else. As the cover would be on a Third Party Only basis, only damage caused to other people’s person or property would be covered.
The majority of van insurance companies have withdrawn this extension from their policy. The main reason for this is the sheer diversity of the types and sizes of vehicles that the average tradesman could be in contact with. For example, a builder could buy a very small van and insure it under a standard van insurance policy. If the extension to drive other vehicles were to be included on this policy he could then conceivably drive 3.5 ton tippers, large pick ups or any other perceived “high risk” vehicles without the insurer knowing what risk they are covering. Due to this lack of information, the majority of van insurance companies have decided to withdraw the extension from their van insurance policies. |
