What paperwork will my van insurer send me?

Most van insurance policies will be slightly different. However, what you will find is that when you decide which policy is best for you, the paperwork you will receive from you van insurer will be pretty much the same across the board. The three main documents you should be familiar with are:
  • Covernote / Certificate
  • Policy Schedule
  • Claim Form

The covernote is a temporary certificate of van insurance. Both are the legal proof that your vehicle is covered by a valid van insurance policy. You should always keep your van insurance certificate safe as you may need to produce it at any point during the life of your policy. In addition, you will need to either show your annual certificate of van insurance or a covernote valid for at least 30 days in order to tax your van.

The policy schedule is of equal importance to the certificate of van insurance. It should be read in conjunction with the certificate and policy booklet as it actually states what is covered by your van insurance policy. As you can imagine, every customer is going to be different from a van insurance companies point of view. As a result of this, not every policy condition and exclusion will apply to every van insurance policy sold by that company. The schedule and policy booklet will tell you exactly what you are covered for and will list what the policy doesn’t cover you for. It is important that you read this schedule when you take out the policy as you need to make sure you are adequately covered for your use of the van.

The claim form is usually sent to a customer as and when they need it. It will need to be completed with as much information as possible about the incident you are trying to claim for. If you are ever unfortunate enough to have to fill one in, make sure you include as much information as possible and make sure that you are covered for every aspect of your van usage.
